The Gingerbread Man!

HULLO! I've just completed my third last week of uni - only 2 more to go!! WOOHOOO!!! of course, then comes the daunting task of work placement, but let's just ignore that for now....

Anyways, yesterday was the 21st birthday of another one of my good friends (yes, i am in the middle of the 21st season of my friends), and we surprised her with a SHREK themed get-together! Twas SO much fun! We all dressed up in our fav Shrek characters and knocked on her door to scream SURPRISE at her haha. I dressed up as the gingerbread man because my 'outside' voice pretty much is on par with his. See if you can spot the difference! We're practically twins!!

Hard to tell the difference eh!?! Ok, my costume was the bomb! Apart from the fact that i must have used glue instead of white paint to paint on all his icing features......yea bit of a fail. But other than that the similarities are just uncanny right?!?!??!

Hey, for a sewing expedition that started at 1am the night before, i think i look preeeeettty good =P.  

Needless to say, walking up to our friend's house dressed up in our gear, we got more than a few odd looks from the people in the passing cars... 

Hahaha anyways, as well as dressing up, we all made different foods to match the theme. There were things like 'worm cupcake' brownies, 'Shrek's swamp' chocolate tart with green cream, 'ogre's dandruff' lamingtons, 'rat tail curry' pasta, 'swamp sand' fried rice' - very interesting range! I, of course, chose to make gingerbread men!

Aren't they cute! Love gingerbread, especially when it's not too gingery. Hope you like them!

Gingerbread Men
Makes 16 (and a few mini gingerbread men =P)

125g butter, room temp (i microwaved mine for 20 mins, straight out of the fridge)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg yolk
2 1/2 cups plain flour
1 tsp baking soda
3 tsp ground ginger
1/2 cup golden syrup

1. Preheat oven to 180C (350F). Line cookie sheets or baking trays with baking paper.

2. Beat butter and sugar together till light and creamy. Beat in egg yolk until combined. 

3. Sift in dry ingredients and mix together. Stir in golden syrup.  Mix dough together and knead on lightly floured surface.

3. Roll out dough until approx. 3mm thick. Cut gingerbread men shapes using cookie cutter (you can use other shapes if you like). Re-roll left over dough and cut more shapes.

4. Place shapes on trays and bake for 10 mins or until lightly golden. Cool on the trays.

5. Decorate when fully cooled.
